Departure from Piombino at 08:30 towards Pianosa Island. Pianosa is the fifth island of the Tuscan Archipelago and it's full of history and nature. As the italian name itself implies, it is the only island in the archipelago without hills and on the whole flat (the highest point reaches only 29 meters above the sea level).
The island, vaguely triangular in shape, alternates stretches of rocky coast with sandy beaches; the main one is called Cala Giovanna, a charming white sand beach with crystal clear water and a moltitude of fish that bring to the visitor's mind Caribbean landscapes; from Cala Giovanna you can also see the ruins of a Roman villa.
The island still houses residential structures dating back to the roman imperial period in which Postumio Agrippa, grandson of Augustus, lived here as an exile. Its territory is partly scrubland and partly cultivated with vines and olive trees. Along the paths you can admire the typical vegetation of the Mediterranean scrub such as mastic, rosemary, juniper and cistus.
Further excursions can be booked on-line before the day of the tour.
You could also swim in the sea inside Cala Giovanna, the only beach where bathing is allowed. A visit to the small village on the island is recommended. At 17:00 departure from Pianosa and return to Piombino (arrival at 19:30).
Advice: hat, sneakers, water, insect repellent, sunscreen, mask, swimsuit and beach towel. Packed lunch if you want to enjoy your visit to the fullest; those wishing a full meal will find instead a bar/restaurant on the island.
