Departure at 08:15 from San Vincenzo towards Porto Azzurro. A village of fishermen and farmers with the former name of Longone. By observing the current coat of arms of the Municipality of Porto Azzurro it is possible to identify the ancient origins of the town whose history - dating back to the 17th century - is inextricably linked to the Spanish domination, so much so that even today many families bear surnames dating back to that period.
During the many historical events that led to bloody battles, resistances and conquests on Elba, the imposing Forte di Longone - built by the Spaniards in the previous century - was first occupied in 1646 by French troops and, later, was reconquered by the Spaniards themselves.
The urban settlement was built in the area below the Spanish fortress, called the marina, an ideal location for both freight yard and refuge for ships. Due to the mild climate of the area, its economy developed above all in agriculture and fishing. After the WW2, the inhabitants of Portolongone asked and obtained in 1947 the possibility of changing the name of the settlement in Porto Azzurro. Since then, a new story had begun, more independent from the Spanish Fortress which in the meantime has become a famous detention house. Porto Azzurro started promoting its historical and natural treasures in the 1950s and 1960s, thus encouraging tourism in the area. Since then, Porto Azzurro has become one of the favorite destinations for thousands of Italian and foreign tourists.
Piazza Matteotti, the most beautiful square on Elba Island - and among the most beautiful in Italy - is a most renown meeting point for romantic strolls and shopping. Many historical, gastronomic, cultural and entertainment events take place in the square. The square and the promenade have been completely modernized in recent years; two large fountains with water features and luxurious canopies with climbing plants frame the many shops and restaurants that embellish the whole town.
The Carmignani promenade is a panoramic path on the coast of Porto Azzurro; it connects the seafront of Porto Azzurro to the beach of Barbarossa along the walls of the fort San Giacomo (the ancient Spanish fortress now used as a prison and therefore not available to visit). The Carmignani promenade is about 1 km long and is equipped with benches and rest areas; being mostly flat, it is also suitable for children and elderly people and can be covered in about 20 minutes; you will be surrounded by the scent of the Mediterranean scrub with a panoramic view of the sea front of Porto Azzurro.
